A pinched nerve, or something else entirely.

How care works here

Find out what it actually is first

Dr. Willhite evaluates patients systematically and thoroughly, because back pain that turns out to be pneumonia does not respond to an adjustment.

Step 01

An extensive history

We start with the full picture rather than the spot that hurts, and you are welcome to ask anything.

Step 02

Chiropractic, neurological and orthopedic exam

A thorough exam, with x-ray and laboratory testing performed on an as needed basis rather than by default.

Step 03

Treatment on a proven approach

Several adjustive procedures and spinal analyses, with specific spinal exercises alongside the adjustments.

Step 04

Referral when that is the right answer

If a patient is not responding as anticipated we re-evaluate, and refer to another practitioner when the problem is outside our expertise.

What we do

Diagnosis first, then treatment

Serving patients in the most scientific manner available, with an emphasis on treating everyone with understanding and kindness.

Meet the doctor

Dr. Dean Willhite, DC, DABCI

Dr. Willhite has served the Manitowoc area for over 25 years. He was the first chiropractor in the state of Wisconsin granted hospital ordering privileges, and is still one of the few in Manitowoc who holds them, which changes what he can find out about your case.

It means he can order labs, CT scans, ultrasounds, x-rays and MRIs, so leg pain or hand numbness can be checked against a blood clot, diabetes or hypothyroidism rather than assumed to be a pinched nerve. Back pain can turn out to be pneumonia on a chest x-ray instead of a rib out. Then the treatment plan is built on a non-pharmaceutical approach to the actual cause, with lab access to follow progress.

He holds membership in the Wisconsin Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Association and the Council on Diagnosis and Internal Disorders, and serves on the board of the American Board of Chiropractic Specialties helping with licensing and recertification procedures.

  • Doctorate of Chiropractic, Northwestern College of Chiropractic, top 10% of class
  • Diplomate of the American Board of Chiropractic Internists, 1999
  • Degree in Acupuncture, 1991, and BS Human Biology, 1992
  • Certified in Cox Decompression Adjustment and Manipulation, 2005
  • State of Wisconsin Nutrition Counseling Certificate, 2007
  • First DC in Manitowoc County with hospital privileges at Holy Family Memorial, 1994
  • President of the ACA Council on Diagnosis and Internal Disorders, 2015 and 2016

Questions we get asked

Because they let Dr. Willhite order labs, CT scans, ultrasounds, x-rays and MRIs directly. Leg pain and hand numbness can come from a blood clot, diabetes or a thyroid problem rather than a pinched nerve, and imaging is how you tell.

X-ray examination and laboratory testing are performed on an as needed basis, not automatically.

We re-evaluate, and if a patient's primary health problem is outside our realm and expertise we refer them to another health care provider. The goal is what is best for the patient.

A flexion distraction compression table used for disc injuries and low back conditions. Dr. Willhite has been certified in Cox Decompression Adjustment and Manipulation Technique since 2005, and the office runs the latest version of the table.

Yes. The reception area keeps a chiropractic and holistic health reference library, including recent chiropractic and medical research articles, and informative brochures and handouts are free to patients.
